Rachel Carson

A Year in Beadnell has been inspired by the US marine biologist and proto-environmentalist Rachel Carson, best-known for her seminal work on pesticide misuse, Silent Spring. Her lesser-known books about coastal environments are wonderful and Carson's poetry of the sea has been the engine behind this project.

"If there is poetry in my writing [about the sea] it is not because I put it there, but because one cannot write about the sea and leave the poetry out." – Rachel Carson
